If you have lived in Des Moines for more than a summer or two, you already know the calendar used to feel scattered. A concert here, a market there, a festival somewhere else, and you needed a car and a plan to string any of it together. That is not what August 2026 is doing. For roughly three weeks, almost everything worth walking to is happening at two addresses about a five minute stroll apart, on a schedule that overlaps just enough to matter.
The thesis is simple. If you live within reach of the Marina and Des Moines Beach Park, the last three Wednesdays of the Summer Concert Series, the Saturday Farmers Market, and the Aug. 29 Poverty Bay Blues & Brews Festival are running on the same footpath. You do not have to pick between them. You have to time them.
The Two Addresses Doing Most of the Work
Almost every named event on the August calendar lands at one of two spots.
- 22030 Cliff Avenue S — Des Moines Beach Park, a 19.6-acre waterfront property. Home of the Summer Concert Series and the Aug. 29 blues festival.
- 22307 Dock Avenue S — The Marina, the Farmers Market on Saturdays, and the Quarterdeck cafe and tap room.
If you draw a line between them on foot, you are looking at a walk most residents already do on a nice evening. What has changed is how many separately organized events now share that line during a single month.
What August Actually Looks Like, Wednesday by Wednesday
The Summer Concert Series is the spine. Des Moines announced its 2026 Summer Concert Series with six Wednesday evening performances at Des Moines Beach Park from mid-July through mid-August, with concerts running 7 to 8:30 p.m. alongside food trucks and a beer garden. Three of those Wednesdays are still ahead in August.

Two things worth pointing out here that a generic events roundup will not tell you. First, Aug. 19 is the closer. If you have been skipping the concerts because you assumed there would always be another Wednesday, there will not be. Second, the concerts end at 8:30 p.m., which is exactly the point at which the Marina end of the walk is at its best light. If you leave Beach Park at 8:35 and walk south, you land at the Quarterdeck's deck almost precisely when the Olympics start turning pink.
The Saturday That Isn't Just a Farmers Market
The Des Moines Waterfront Farmers Market runs every Saturday from June 6 to November 7, 2026, between 10:00 a.m. and early afternoon at the Marina. That is the version you already know. Here is the version you might not.
Special days on the 2026 DMFM calendar include Opening Day on June 6, Family Day on July 18, Senior Day on July 25, National Farmers Market Week on August 8, Dog Days on September 5, and Hispanic Heritage Month on September 12. National Farmers Market Week on Aug. 8 is the one to circle. It is the Saturday between the ABBAGRAPHS concert and Stevie and the Blue Flames, which means it sits right in the middle of the tightest stretch of the summer. If you have out of town family visiting the second week of August, the schedule practically writes itself.
The market's other quiet advantage is that it front-loads your day so the Wednesday evening you were going to skip because you were tired feels more like a payoff than a chore.
Quarterdeck Is the Connector
Between the two anchor addresses sits the piece that stitches the calendar together. Quarterdeck is a locally owned, family operated tap room and wine bar by Ken Rogers and Catherine Carbone Rogers, serving craft beer and cider, wines from around the world, and hand pulled espresso drinks. Quarterdeck announced a partnership with Anchor House Roasting, with espresso, decaf, drip, and cold brew coffee proudly made in Buckley, Washington.
The mechanical thing to know about Quarterdeck for August planning: the cafe serves light snacks and pastries, and patrons are encouraged to bring take-out food from local restaurants or have it delivered. That is the operating instruction the reviews bury. You can order dinner from any Des Moines restaurant that delivers, meet it at Quarterdeck's deck, and drink from Quarterdeck's list while you eat it. On a Wednesday concert night, that turns a walk between Beach Park and the Marina into a proper dinner without requiring a reservation anywhere.
The Quarterdeck is known for its views of the Puget Sound, Vashon Island, and sunsets over the Olympic Mountains. August sunsets over the Olympics, for the record, are the ones that make people who moved away from Des Moines start looking at property listings again.
The Aug. 29 Closer
Ten days after Power of Love finishes the concert series, Beach Park hosts one more big thing. Des Moines Poverty Bay Blues & Brews Festival 2026 is happening Sat. Aug. 29, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. onwards at Des Moines Beach Park.
Two implications for residents. One, if you missed Stevie and the Blue Flames on Aug. 12, the Aug. 29 festival is your make-good. Two, Beach Park will be full that day in a way it is not on a Wednesday, which matters if you were planning a quiet Saturday walk. Trade your morning routine for an afternoon at the festival, or trade the festival for an early morning at the pier before the beer garden opens.
A Resident's Actual August Saturday
Here is what the second Saturday of August looks like if you use the whole footprint:
- 9:45 a.m. Walk down to the Marina. Coffee at Quarterdeck from the Anchor House lineup.
- 10:00 a.m. Farmers Market opens. National Farmers Market Week signage, more vendors than a normal Saturday.
- 11:30 a.m. Pier walk. The long, well-maintained pier extends far into the sea.
- 12:30 p.m. Lunch delivered from a Des Moines restaurant, eaten at Quarterdeck with a cider.
- Evening. Reset at home. Wednesday is only four days away.
You will notice this itinerary requires exactly zero driving after the initial walk down the hill. That is the point. The calendar has done the work of collapsing itself.
Why This Matters if You Have Lived Here Awhile
Des Moines has always had summer. What it has not always had is a summer that hangs together at a single walking distance without a car in the middle of the day. The reason it does now is unglamorous. The Marina has a working cafe on the boardwalk, the Arts Commission decided to keep the whole concert series at Beach Park instead of moving one or two nights elsewhere, the Farmers Market added themed Saturdays that give you a reason to come back on a specific date, and Poverty Bay Blues & Brews kept its Beach Park footprint. None of those decisions were coordinated. The overlap is accidental. The effect on your August is not.
If you are hosting anyone in Des Moines this month, the pitch writes itself: two addresses, one walk, three Wednesdays, one Saturday festival. If you are a long time resident who has drifted into the habit of driving to Kent or Burien on weekend evenings because there was "nothing going on" locally, this is the August to stop doing that.
